چکیده

Several protocols have been proposed to synchronize the logical processes (LP’s) of a parallel discrete event simulation (PDES). While most protocols have been known to perform well under certain conditions, the general observation has been that the performance of protocols is sensitive to the application being simulated, sometimes even to a particular instance of it. In this technical note, we address the issue of determining a lower bound on the completion time of a particular simulation run using critical path analysis. Two studies have been conducted previously on this subject. While these studies have provided some useful insights into the performance of protocols, certain issues have remained unexplored. We examine these issues and present four enhancements to the earlier results one of which is to indicate a flaw in one of the previous studies. The two main contributions of this work are to present: (i) a trivial lower bound for all PDES’s which contradicts a result from one of the previous studies and, (ii) a reasonable lower bound on the completion time for all PDES’s.

A High-Speed Dual-Bit Parallel Adder based on Carbon Nanotube ‎FET technology for use in arithmetic units

In this paper, a Dual-Bit Parallel Adder (DBPA) based on minority function using Carbon-Nanotube Field-Effect Transistor (CNFET) is proposed. The possibility of having several threshold voltage (Vt) levels by CNFETs leading to wide use of them in designing of digital circuits. The main goal of designing proposed DBPA is to reduce critical path delay in adder circuits. The proposed design positi...

Analyzing the Effect of Distribution to the Simulation on a Network of Workstations

In this paper, the effect of communication networks to the distributed simulation has been studied. A cellular network application is simulated on a network of workstations, where an ordinary 10 Mbps Ethernet LAN has been used as the communication network. The effect of distribution is analyzed by using the well known concept of critical path analysis , which requires event traces from real sim...

Lookahead, Rollback and Lookback: Searching for Parallelism in Discrete Event Simulation

We discuss synchronization protocols for Parallel Discrete Event Simulations. We start with traditional conservative protocols based on lookahead and optimistic ones employing rollbacks. Next, we observe that a logical process may be able to change the simulation past locally (without involving other logical processes). This ability is named lookback, and is a basis for a new class of PDES sync...

Recent Developments in Discrete Event Systems

This article is a brief exposure of the process approach to a newly emerging area called "discrete event systems" in control theory and summarizes some of the recent developments in this area. Discrete event systems is an area of research that is developing within the interstices of computer, control and communication sciences. The basic direction of research addresses issues in the analysis an...

Supercritical Speedup.PDF

The notions of the critical path of events and critical time of an event are key concepts in analyzing the performance of a parallel discrete event simulation. The highest critical time of any event in a simulation is a lower bound on the time it takes to execute a simulation using any conservative simulation mechanism, and is also a lower bound on the time taken by some optimistic methods. How...
